SIXTH GRADE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Study Skills: Class is designed to teach middle school survival skills such as how to be organized, how to prioritize assignments, how to take notes, how to study for tests, and other related skills.
Introduction to Art: Art includes drawing, painting, shape and color theory.
Introduction to Drama: Students will study the history of drama as well as basic acting skills and set direction. Students will also participate in skits and school productions.
Introduction to Music: Students will be taught the fundamentals of music notation and/or build upon fundamentals that have already been mastered. The history of music and various types of music will be explored and analyzed.
Computer/Library Skills: Designed to provide advanced computer and library research skills in addition to keyboarding as a means to help prepare incoming students for school success.
Lion’s Quest: Program developed through Lion’s Club International to help students (1) become more self-confident, (2) communicate better at school and home, (3) make good decisions and resolve conflicts and, (4) avoid alcohol and other drugs. As part of the program, students will work with other students to plan and carry out a school or community service learning project.
Band: Designed for those who would like to learn how to play a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. Students will be taught the fundamentals of music notation and/or build upon fundamentals that have already been mastered. This course may include rehearsals and concerts outside of the school day.
Orchestra: Designed for those students who would like to learn how to play a string instrument such as the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students will be taught the fundamentals of music notation, aural discrimination, and appreciation for music.

 
SEVENTH GRADE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Art: Art includes drawing, painting, shape, and color theory. Course also includes art history and art exhibitions.
AVID: Application required. Do you want to go to college? Do you have B’s and C’s now, but a goal to be on Honor Roll? Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) is a study skills class designed to assist students most underrepresented in the UC system work toward college acceptance. See the AVID instructor for more details and an application.
Band: Designed for those who would like to learn how to play a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. Students will be taught the fundamentals of music notation and/or build upon fundamentals that have already been mastered. This course may include rehearsals and concerts outside of the school day. See the Band Director for either Intermediate Band or Advanced Band.
Dance P.E.: Audition Required. Students will engage in various dance styles throughout the year. These will include ballet, modern, jazz, musical theater, social, country, and cultural. Dance students are expected to wear specified dance clothing and perform at school assemblies and the Spring Concert.
Drama 1: Year-long class in which students will put on class plays, participate in skill-based activities, go on field trips to local theaters, and perform in showcases with Drama II students. This course is the prerequisite for Drama II.
Orchestra: Designed for those students who would like to learn how to play a string instrument such as the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students will be taught the fundamentals of music notation, aural discrimination, and appreciation for music.
Photography/Yearbook: Are you more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it? Do you like art but can’t draw? This class may be for you! Learn basic photographic skills while creating the yearbook. Students will work in class and on location using primarily digital cameras. Be a part of the first ever AOMS photography class!
Science Technology: Students explore sixteen subjects ranging from drag car design to film animation in this state-of-the-art laboratory. Each subject will be studied for seven days.
Technical Theatre: This semester class concentrates on the elements of backstage production. Students will learn about theater lighting, set design, sound effects, stage management, prop design, costume, theater makeup, and program design. This is a hands-on class in which students will participate in building scale models, operating sound and lighting equipment, as well as go on field trips to local theater facilities to learn about updated technology.

Drama II: Prerequisite: Seventh Grade Drama I. For 8th graders only, plus Audition Required. Students will put on class plays, have exchanges with Valley Middle School drama students, and compete in Fall and Shakespeare Festivals.

Spanish I: Prerequisite: A or B in English. For 8th graders only. This is a college prep course that may earn high school credit. Through oral and written exercises, drills, dialogues, skits, and CD ROM lessons, students will develop the necessary skills for 2nd year Spanish in high school.
Teacher Assistant or Office Aide: Application required. Would you like to assist a teacher with lessons, bulletin boards, and more? Or learn valuable office skills that could prepare you for a paid position in your future? This semester class is for you if you have a 2.5 grade point average or better and no N’s or U’s in Citizenship. See office secretary for an application.
